What Are The Symptoms Of GDV?

- Restlessness
- Anxiety
- Excessive drooling (an indication of severe pain).
- Abdominal pain
- Appearance of abdominal bloating.
- Retching or more likely unsuccessful attempts at retching (gagging) or vomiting a foamy type of white or clear fluid.
- Abdomen feels hard or sounds hollow when you tap it gently with your hand
- Pacing
- Whining
- Hearing abnormal gurgling or digestive sounds.
- Pale or off-color gums.

Based on our personal experience, the initial indicator is that the dog is acting “out of character”, i.e. lethargic when otherwise playful.

If these symptoms are present; this is extremely painful to the dog and quick action on your part is critical.  It is always better to be safe than sorry.

Only your Vet can diagnose GDV for certain.  If you suspect GDV, transport your dog to your Vet or if after hours, an emergency Vet clinic IMMEDIATELY.  Know if your veterinarian provides this kind of treatment (not all do!) and know where your closest emergency clinic is located.  Time is of the essence and any delay could be fatal.
