What Causes GDV? GDV is definitely linked to the breed and build of the dog.  Large breed dogs with deep, narrow chests are much more likely to develop GDV.  Unfortunately, there seems to be no clear cut answer as to why some large breed dogs will develop GDV on an individual basis.  There are many good websites available so we strongly advise you do your own research and consult your veterinarian.  The best advice we can give you is to be aware of the symptoms and be ready to act if your dog shows signs of GDV.  Know if your veterinarian provides this kind of treatment (not all do!) and know where your closest emergency clinic is located.
